Memorial for Tillie Olsen

"Tillie Olsen is internationally known and honored for her powerful, brilliantly crafted, poetic writing depicting the lives of working class people, women and people of color with respect, profound understanding and deep love...."

Tillie Olsen died January 1, 2007, shortly before her 95th birthday. An article about her, her life and work, reprinted from another source, is at the blog Blue Collar Holler, here. Additional articles about her, interviews with her, and a couple of short excerpts from her writing, are at the Modern American Poetry website, here.

A public memorial for Tillie Olsen will take place on Saturday, February 17, 2007, at 1:00 P.M., at First Congregational Church of Oakland, 2501 Harrison Street, Oakland, California. Further information can be found at: http://www.tillieolsen.net/ The first paragraph above is quoted from this website. The website also contains much more information about Olsen's life and writings, including photos and a beautiful biographical article written by Olsen's daughters, and links to other online articles about her.

Comments:
lyle, i hadn't realized that tillie olsen was still alive... that she *could* be alive. so i was surprised for a very different reason.

olsen was certainly one of the forebearers of poetry for women and the un-priileged. she was a foremother for other women poets who have all walked a forged path behind her. she not only gave language back to the simple world where it should live, she wrote with passion and conviction.

thanks

I had never heard of her, so I appreciate this. I will have to look up more of her work and writings.
